Beer People Are Good People

September 29, 2016 // 0 Comments

For @SalfordBeerFest Jim,”Beer People Are Good People” has become a bit of a catchphrase.  Jim is a great champion of northern brewers and pubs, he extended his boundary to include us in Crewe as he’s enjoyed the beers from Offbeat.  Salford Beer Fest is in it’s third and final year and I may be speaking out of turn here and a mass generalisation for the participating brewers but for the support Jim gives the brewers in his tweeting and blogging and drinking we like to [...]

C Smackdown

September 28, 2016 // 2 Comments

As October rolls ever closer it’s irking me (and probably a few others in the licensed trade) about Go Sober for October. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favour of raising money for charity, especially cancer ones having lost my mother to it, and the benefits of not drinking alcohol for a while can’t be denied. BUT the licensed trade plays a huge part in raising money for various charities throughout the year and this encourages people to say away. Pubs are the heart of [...]

The Year Of Change

September 21, 2016 // 0 Comments

Having one of those days where I’m meant to be doing deliveries but pottering about and trying to get organised and motivated to chuck casks on the van! (Sorry for my lateness today pubs!). According to the stats for this website my post back in January about changing things here and downsizing was the most read ever.  So it feels like time for an update while I avoid doing what I’m meant to be!  The dinky brewery kit and I have had some problems – flooding and beers not [...]

Berries, Beans & Beer – drinks festival

September 11, 2016 // 0 Comments

If you’ve been at #Crewe beer festival you may have seen the Berries, Beans & Beer banner so this seems like a good opportunity to tell you a little more about it.  The deposit has been paid and we’re booked in to the Crewe Heritage Centre from 28th to 30th April 2017. 2 weeks ago Otherton Ales had the Argo Bar at Has Bean coffee in Staffordshire and after a couple of beers it seemed a great idea to put on a drinks festival with beer, coffee and gin.  The gin is [...]

Save the Date!

Gin Festival and Grateful Deaf beer gathering is in the planning for Thursday 6th October through to Friday 7th October – more information to follow when I have it but at the moment in the midst of trying to see what Grateful Deaf beers we can get to us from Ken’s brewing collaborations this year and start to compile a gin list and build an event round it.  More soon, it’ll be worth the [...]

Grateful Deaf brew day

August 12, 2016 // 0 Comments

Today Ken Fisher is with me and we are brewing up his IPA recipe with a few tweaks for what we have for available ingredients! Ken brewed an India Brown Ale here  three years ago (pump clip shown!) and every year he comes back and does a European tour brewing numerous times while fitting in some time volunteering on the International Bar at the Great British Beer Festival. We are aiming for about 5.4% American style IPA with a touch of colour and Crystal, Cascade and Columbus hops. [...]

Bottle Fridge

I was asked the other day about whether I would stock some mainstream lager in the brewery bar. It was an immediate “Nope” and then I was asked about keeping some under the counter. I think i thought on it for maybe 2 seconds and then replied in the negative too.   My first reaction was if its under the bar nobody is going to know its there to buy and then, why would I?!  As a brewer I think we make some great products and if the full on flavour of the big IPAs or the [...]

We do run a token system on the Friday evening from 5pm and all day Saturday – besides me everyone [...]

I’ve been asked a couple of times about #NewBrewThursday on the blackboards in the bar so now is the chance to find out more! It’s well established (of American origin I believe) and gives you the opportunity to try new beers and brewers to showcase new stuff.  So I have something new for you, started by accident rather than design and is going out as Oddity 10 Citra Wheat. Citra hops are gorgeous, packed full of all the citrusy flavours and all on a light malt base, the wheat [...]

I get to blog about all the fun stuff, like toilets today!  I know ours aren’t the most glam and working hard on painting, cleaning and tidying them up to make them a bit more respectable.  Also hard at work on a mosaic bottle cap floor in between the bar being open which will hopefully look amazing when finished (probably a few months away at this [...]
